“Don’t be one of those 80% of people that fail, year after year, to keep their resolutions. I have 6 proven tips to set you up for success, not only this year, but for every year after. So if you’re ready to actually commit to keeping those new years resolutions, stick around to find out exactly how.”
Now before we begin, I always like to start my video with a quote that inspired me and I feel relates to the video.
"Begin with the end in mind” ~Stephen Covey
I chose this quote because it reminds me of something that Tony Horton said in his p90x videos, which if you’re not familiar, it was a best selling home fitness program. He talked about keeping a journal of what you accomplished...reps/weights, because, and I quote, “How do you know what to do, if you don’t know what you did” Tony Horton. Look at that, two quotes in one video.
But look, the point is if you want to achieve your goals, whatever they are, you need to be able to see it, imagine it in your mind, or get creative with a vision board even. So if you take Stephens approach, you will know what your end goal is, and if you incorporate Tonys approach simultaneously, you will know what steps to take along the way, because you’ve been keeping track of what you’ve already done to get there.
Tip #1 - Define the “why” behind the resolution. You are more likely to feel compelled to complete this resolution if there is a motive behind it, especially one coming from a emotional standpoint.
Tip #2 - Specify the resolutions. For instance, if you want to save more money, specify how you’re going to do this. Are you going to set up a budget for specific things? Are you simply trying to pay off your credit cards or your vehicle? Once you specify what it is in the resolution that has the most meaning, or “why” behind it, you can then break it down to make it more achievable.
Tip #3 - Make sure your have “SMART” goals in mind. And what I mean by that, is if we break out what the SMART acronym stands for, you will see one of the best ways to approach your resolutions.
Specific: A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal.
Measurable: Choose a goal with measurable progress, so that you can see the changes as they occur.
Attainable/Achievable: Is exactly what it sounds like. Make sure your goal is something you can actually either attain or achieve.
Realistic: This does go hand in hand with attainable/achievable, as your goals can only be realistic if they have met the attainable/achievable threshold.
Time Bound: Setting an time frame for the goal will give you a clear target to achieve.
This is where I like to tell you all about either something I found that’s free, so you can capitalize on it, or something else of value as a thank you for coming and watching my video. For this video, I want to share with you the daily email newsletter "Morning Brew".
Tip #4 - Understand that these resolutions do not have to be done alone. Find some support out there to keep you motivated.
Tip #5 - You may not want to start with all the things on your list! Unless you have been very careful, and only set out one or two goals, the chances are the more resolutions you have, the harder it will be to even keep one of these.
Tip #6 - Understand that you may fail, and that’s okay, as long as you remember to think of this as a true “FAIL”. Meaning, if you look the word FAIL to be an acronym meaning “First Attempt in Learning”, it’s much more easily digestible that this is just a hurdle to overcome.
My 3 Resolutions: Beat cancer, create at least 3 valuable videos per week for you all, and slow down to really enjoy life.
Tell me what your resolutions are! I would love to open a dialog with you all!
Finally, a note to my little one. Azalea, whatever you set your mind to this year, or any other year down the line, you will accomplish your goal. I guarantee that. However, if you don’t put in the effort and stick to your convictions, you will not make it. Remember, you are my daughter, and I refuse to allow you to give up on yourself. So remember this, you can do anything you simply put your mind to doing, and that is an essential lesson in learning how to “be adult”.
