❃𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟰𝟬 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲—John Lewis never backed down from the fight for civil rights, voting rights, and fair housing. His entire life was about getting into "good trouble, necessary trouble."

✦At just 23 years old, he stepped onto one of the biggest stages in history—the 1963 March on Washington—representing the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC):
✧He spoke before Dr. King’s "I Have a Dream" speech, warning the nation that "𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘸!" His words were passionate, urgent, and set the tone for the next phase of the movement.
✧His young age didn’t stop him from delivering one of the day’s most powerful and fiery speeches, cementing him as a national leader in the fight for justice.

❃The Fair Housing Act of 1968 was a landmark victory for housing equality. Already a key civil rights leader, Lewis kept fighting against discrimination in homeownership and lending.

⬥Congressman for 33 years (1987-2020), John Lewis carried his activism into Washington, championing:

⬦Stronger enforcement of anti-redlining laws.
⬦Expanding access to fair housing programs to protect homebuyers from discrimination.

⬥In 2011, President Barack Obama awarded John Lewis the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
⬦A powerful full-circle moment—once beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge for justice, now honored at the White House by America’s first Black president, a leader his movement helped shape.

⟐Founded the Afro-American Realty Company (1903) to secure housing for Black families in Harlem when white landlords tried to displace them.
⟐Transformed Harlem into the Black Mecca of New York, setting the foundation for the Harlem Renaissance.
⟐Proved that Black people weren’t just renters—they were owners, investors, and wealth builders.
⟐Paved the way for future Black real estate professionals and homeownership advocates by breaking barriers in an industry designed to exclude us.
