Ohio’s Affordable Housing Shortage Deepens

A report released Thursday shows nearly half of Ohio’s 1.58 million renters are paying more than they can afford on rent, as the state faces a shortage of 266,000 affordable and available rental units.

The 2026 Gap Report, released jointly each year by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) and the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio (COHHIO), says Ohio’s 422,000 extremely low-income renters are especially precarious. 73% of these households spend over half of their income on rent, up from 66% five years ago.

The Disappearance of the Moderately Priced Single-Family Home

Around the corner from where I live in Cambridge, Massachusetts, there is, or I should say was, a one and a half story bungalow, one of almost a dozen identical cottages built near each other between 1928 and 1931. The house was small: just over 1,100 square feet, divided into five rooms, including one bathroom. Last July a developer demolished it and now has built a “luxury single-family house” with 3,600 square feet, four bedrooms, and four and a half bathrooms. The asking price is $4.5 million.
