Bloomington is that secret summer spot that you never knew you needed.

The students are gone. The sidewalks open up. And suddenly IU’s campus is yours: wide, quiet, and somehow even more beautiful than you remembered. Wander the limestone buildings, find a shady bench on the Sample Gates lawn, and just breathe.

But the part that I absolutely love? Monroe Lake.

The water, the stillness, the way summer feels slower out there. My family has been coming here my whole life, and it still takes my breath away every time. Pack a cooler, rent a kayak, find your spot on the shore, and enjoy those stunning water views.

That’s a perfect Bloomington summer day. Campus in the morning. Downtown in the afternoon. Golden hour on the water.

The question isn’t “how much house can I afford?” It’s actually three different questions. And most people are asking the wrong one.
A lender approval tells you what they’re willing to risk. Not what’s actually smart for your life. They can approve you for nearly half your gross income: that’s before taxes, before bills, before anything. And sometimes they’ll come in way under what you can actually handle because they’re not counting your bonus or your side income.
Preapproval is part of the equation, not the final answer.
The real strategy? Start with a monthly payment you’re genuinely comfortable with. Build a real budget. Work backward from there. That’s how you find a house that fits your life, not just your credit score.
