Take a look inside this dumpster…

That’s not broken brick or leftover debris — it’s a full pallet of brand-new material discarded during the construction process of a new home.

One thing many buyers never see during a build is just how much waste can be generated along the way. In some cases, perfectly usable materials are removed, replaced, or simply thrown away as schedules change and construction keeps moving.

Whether you agree with it or not, the cost of construction waste is often built into the final price of the home.

At first glance, this outdoor AC disconnect doesn’t look like much… but once opened, the problem becomes obvious.

The disconnect was loose on the wall and missing the internal protective cover, leaving energized electrical connections exposed inside the enclosure.

Issues like this are easy to overlook, especially because most people would never think to open one of these boxes in the first place. But conditions like this can create a serious safety concern if accidentally accessed or contacted.

This is exactly why details matter during a home inspection.

This humidifier duct was completely disconnected and crushed flat to make room for the utility room sliding doors. At that point, airflow and performance were no longer part of the plan.

Sometimes the “fix” ends up creating an entirely different problem.

Issues like this are easy to overlook during a walkthrough, especially in tight utility spaces where most people rarely stop to look closely.

Rotten fascia boards and failing gutters can do more than cause drainage problems. Once the wood deteriorates and the roof framing becomes exposed, it creates an easy access point for moisture intrusion, wood damage, and even wildlife entering the attic space.

This is one of those issues that often starts small… and gets expensive over time.

Would you have noticed the exposed framing from the ground?

Take a look at this kitchen exhaust vent…

That flap is the backdraft damper—
it’s supposed to close when the fan is off.

This one doesn’t. It stays open…
leaving a direct path for outside air, moisture, and pests.

On a 2026 build… that’s not wear and tear—
it’s improper or defective.

That’s a window… sitting right inside the shower surround.

No proper integration, visible gaps, and not sealed the way a wet area should be.

“That black stuff isn’t just cosmetic…”

Take a closer look at this direct vent,

heavy soot buildup and visible heat damage like this aren’t typical for a properly operating gas fireplace,

and this kind of staining and distortion can point to a combustion or venting issue that needs attention,

not just a cosmetic concern, but a sign the system may not be functioning as intended.
