Black homeownership has long been a powerful tool for building stability, wealth, and legacy, especially here in Metro Detroit. And while there has been progress, it’s also important to acknowledge the full truth.
In recent years, many Black Detroiters have lost homes due to predatory land contracts, deed fraud, tax foreclosures, and scams that targeted vulnerable homeowners and first-time buyers. These practices didn’t just take properties, they disrupted families, erased generational wealth, and damaged trust in the system.

At the same time, Black homeowners in Detroit have shown incredible resilience- staying, rebuilding, and continuing to invest in their communities despite barriers that should never have existed.
Black History Month is personal for me. It reinforces why education, transparency, and ethical representation matter so much in this industry. Everyone deserves a fair, honest path to homeownership, not confusing contracts or false promises.
Honoring the past means telling the truth, protecting our communities, and helping create better outcomes moving forward. 🖤
