This event is very dear to my heart. I have been lobbying for DACA since I did a presentation in my Global Citizenship class way back when I was attending Webster Universty.
I appeal to all of you to Join the Immigration Task Force in supporting DACA immigrants by attending this fundraising event! The purpose is to collect funds to help these individuals pay the mandatory two-year renewal fee of $555 or $605, up from last year's $495. DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, offers young people the chance to avoid deportation and grants them essential documents like work permits and social security numbers. Despite contributing nearly $2.1 billion to Social Security and Medicare, they are not eligible for these benefits under current law.
DACA recipients play a crucial role in the economy, earning almost $27.9 billion in annual wages. Yet, they face significant challenges such as not being eligible for college financial aid or food stamps, and in some states, like MO, having to pay higher tuition fees. With over 800,000 immigrants relying on DACA as a lifeline, it's vital to show our support.
While over 1.5 million individuals are eligible, current restrictions only allow for renewals, not new applications. The program, initiated during the Obama administration in 2012, has faced legal challenges, with a recent ruling in Texas deeming it illegal. Despite efforts from various organizations, the political landscape has not yet provided a clear path towards a permanent solution for DACA recipients.
