As a South African living in Texas, people always ask me, “What food do South Africans eat?” Well… I always say, “It depends on what language you speak.”
🇿🇦 If you’re Afrikaans, the answer might be steak and braaibroodjies.
🇿🇦 If you’re English, pizza and pasta are probably high on the list.
🇿🇦 If you’re Zulu, Xhosa, or Sesotho, maize meal and chicken might come to mind.
But the truth is, we’re so much more diverse than that.
Food is how we celebrate, connect, comfort, and create memories. We cook with love, gather around the table for hours, and we’re always swapping recipes or telling each other about the hidden gem where we hunted down or food. For South Africans, food is never just about filling a plate—it’s about feeding the soul.
So, if you’re ever visiting South Africa, do yourself a favor and add O’s Restaurant in Parys to your itinerary. From the warm hospitality to the incredible food, it’s one of those places that reminds you why South Africans are so passionate about sharing a meal.
