The Florida Department of Transportation unveiled a multi-million dollar plan to redesign three major highways that is expected to better connect communities within Miami and redefine the skyline with a six-arched signature bridge.
The $802 million-dollar project focuses on improvements of State Road 836 (Dolphin Expressway), Interstate 95 and Interstate 395. Construction would last for four years and its anticipated completion is in Fall 2023. Officials say a majority of the construction delays and detours will be implemented in the evening.
The improvements on SR 836 will begin west of Northwest 17th Avenue and end at the I-95 interchange. Drivers who approach the proposed double-decked entryway at the toll gantry can take the upper level to the MacArthur Causeway, or the lower level to I-95 northbound or Biscayne Boulevard.
On I-95, the concrete pavement for both the northbound and southbound lanes from Northwest 8th and 29th streets will be replaced. Enhancements will also improve the flow of traffic through the Midtown Interchange and reduce safety with additional lanes and a connector ramp.
For I-395, enhancements begin at the Midtown interchange with the Dolphin Expressway and I-95 to the MacArthur Causeway. The arched bridge will span over 1,000 feet over Northeast 2nd Street and SR 5/Biscayne Boulevard.
