When a buyer asks for a seller credit, it's easy to look at the number and think:
“Why should I give up more money?”
But that's not always the right question.
The better question is:
“What is this request accomplishing, and what am I getting in return?”
A buyer may be asking for a credit because they need help with their monthly payment or closing costs—not because they think your property is worth less.
And sometimes, a well-structured concession can help you:
✔️ Keep a stronger contract price
✔️ Help the buyer get comfortable with the payment
✔️ Keep the transaction moving forward
✔️ Potentially avoid another round of price negotiations
Of course, whether a credit makes sense depends on the offer, the buyer's financing, the property and what's permitted under the applicable loan guidelines.
That's where strategy matters.
I don't want my sellers automatically saying yes to concessions—or automatically saying no.
I want to understand why the buyer is asking, what it costs my seller, and whether there's a better way to structure the deal.
Because negotiating isn't about giving away the most.
It's about knowing what you're willing to give, what you're getting in return, and what gets you to the closing table.
