Quick trip to Chicago. Packed with meaning.

I landed Thursday evening at the same time as my daughter, .rozenberg flying in from New York. That alone made the trip worth it.

Then Friday I taught an AI class at the office. Saw my friends and .alt.realtor. Walked downtown, saw The Bean, ate a hotdog. Then went to celebrate a Bar Mitzvah with family.

In between, I spoke with young professionals from IBM, Apple, and Facebook. They told their moms I was “pretty legit” about AI.🤖

This photo means everything to me.

The day our family became American citizens, I understood something in a way I never had before.

Freedom is not just a word.

I left Belgium because I was not free to be Jewish. I hid my identity. I feared for my children. I made the hardest decision of my life. I started over.

New country. New language. New career. New system. New culture.

Starting from scratch is not easy. Reinventing yourself takes everything you have.

But I never forget why I did it.

And I do not take a single day of it for granted.

That cake said it all: “YES, WE ARE.”

We cut it together, all of us, because that is exactly what it was. A family decision. A family commitment. A family freedom.

Today, on Memorial Day, I honor every man and woman whose sacrifice made this possible. It was defended, at the highest price, so that families like mine could walk through that door.
