A bison herd on a Montana conservation reserve has grown to more than 1,000 animals for the first time since the project began over 20 years ago.

American Prairie, a nonprofit working to restore large stretches of native grassland, counted 1,016 bison following this year's calving season. The organization manages more than 600,000 acres of deeded and leased land, with the long-term goal of creating a connected landscape where bison can roam more widely and engage in natural behaviors.

The milestone comes as American Prairie continues working toward its goal of growing the herd to 5,000 bison.
