Perry's phone stayed quiet through six years of failing plays.
He had moved to Atlanta and put his entire savings, about twelve thousand dollars, into staging a play he had written himself. He rented the theatre, hired the cast and did the promotion.
Thirty people came. The money was gone in a weekend, and he spent the next six years taking odd jobs to fund the same show again.
