NC DMV EXPECTED CHANGES TO LICENSE PLATE STICKERS & PAPER VEHICLE REGISTRATIONS

Under the newly passed state budget signed on July 7, 2026, North Carolina is eliminating physical license plate stickers and paper vehicle registration cards. The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) must transition to a fully digital, electronic system by October 1, 2026.

Fees and Renewals: Annual vehicle registration renewals, fees, and safety inspections are still required.

Digital Access: Instead of getting stickers and cards in the mail, your registration proof will be accessible online or through your smartphone.

Paper Copies: You will be able to print your registration card at home. If you require the DMV to mail you a physical copy, a printing and mailing fee will apply.

System Rollout: The NCDMV is actively building this new electronic system to meet the October deadline. You can monitor the progress or check out the NCDMV Website for further implementation updates.
