Corning Rotary District Grant Supports Upcoming “Good Grief Week” – August 11–15, 2025

This August, CareFirst—in partnership with the Southeast Steuben County Library and FLX Works—will once again bring Good Grief Week to families in our region.

Supported in part by a Corning Rotary District Grant, this week-long event (August 11–15, 2025) offers compassionate, creative, and supportive programming to help children, teens, and their loved ones process grief in healthy, meaningful ways.

CareFirst, based in Corning, is well known for its end-of-life care, grief counseling, and mental health support. With Rotary’s funding, the 2025 Good Grief Week will include a variety of engaging and therapeutic experiences for children and families, covering the cost of art supplies, books, program materials, and outreach efforts.

This year’s activities are designed to provide both comfort and connection:

➡️ Story-time with Mr. Ric: Featuring The Dragonfly Story by Kelly Owen—a gentle, hopeful book that helps young listeners explore loss with understanding.

➡️ Memory Rock Painting: Children and families will decorate “memory rocks” to honor loved ones they hold dear.

➡️ Kids Farmers Market: All children under 18 will be invited to select free fresh fruits and vegetables at this weekly market, offered by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. CareFirst will also host a story corner and craft table.

➡️ Family Dragonfly Painting: A symbolic and creative activity for families, using dragonflies—often seen as symbols of transformation—to reflect on life, change, and remembrance.

➡️ Family Carnival Day: The week will conclude with a joyful community celebration featuring classic carnival games, prizes, face painting, and more.

❤️ A Community of Care: Good Grief Week is a reminder that grief is not something we “get over”—it’s something we move through, especially with the support of a caring community. Rotary is proud to support programs like this that offer healing, connection, and hope.
