One of the best places to view the Outer Banks Wild Horses is Corolla Beach, North Carolina, where these animals wander freely through the northern Currituck Banks. Visitors may spot them walking beside the ocean, crossing beach lanes, grazing near marshes, or standing among the dunes and coastal grass. The herd belongs to the rare Banker horse line and is believed to descend from Spanish mustangs brought to the Americas during the 1500s.

The best viewing area begins north of Corolla, where the pavement ends and the beach itself becomes the roadway. Only four-wheel-drive vehicles can reach this remote stretch, which feels quieter and more untamed than the busier resort areas farther south. Guided tours are a good option because local drivers know the terrain and understand how to observe the horses safely. County rules require everyone to remain at least 50 feet away, and feeding the horses is strictly prohibited. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund protects and manages the herd and also operates a free museum in Historic Corolla Village. Visitors can also climb the red-brick Currituck Beach Lighthouse or tour Whalehead, a restored 1920s Art Nouveau mansion overlooking Currituck Sound.

Donkey Derby is coming to Carova! 🫏🇺🇸

One of the most fun and unique 4x4 beach events of the summer is happening just about a half-mile from First Tracks OBX!

Join the Carova community for the 6th Annual Donkey Derby on Friday, July 17th from 3:00–6:00 PM at 2169 Ocean Pearl Road. This family-friendly event benefits Carova Beach Volunteer Fire & Rescue and includes donkey races, homemade donkey voting, food, games, Touch-a-Truck, an apple pie contest, raffles, and plenty of local beach fun.

It’s the kind of only-in-the-4x4 experience that makes staying in Carova so special — laid-back, fun, local, and full of personality.

🐾 Yes, your dogs deserve a beach vacation too.

At First Tracks OBX, the whole family can enjoy the 4x4 beaches — including the four-legged ones. There’s nothing better than sandy paws, ocean air, long beach walks, and tired pups after a day by the water.

Our beach house is dog-friendly, and the wide-open shoreline of North Swan Beach makes it easy to slow down and enjoy the Outer Banks the way it was meant to be enjoyed — together.

A few gentle reminders while visiting: keep pups safely supervised, respect other beachgoers, and give the Corolla wild horses plenty of space if you’re lucky enough to see them nearby.

This is a favorite stop for our First Tracks OBX guests before heading onto the 4x4 beach. Grab a pizza, air down your tires across the street at the Currituck Heritage Park air station, and then hit the sand for vacation mode.

Definitely worth adding to your arrival-day tradition! 🌊🚙🍕

Beach sunsets get all the applause, but North Carolina’s tiny coastal pizzerias can steal the whole trip with one paper-plate slice.
