Built in 1800, the Ingraham Carriage Barn in Portland, Maine, is a Federal style, timber-framed structure which retained many original details despite multiple changes throughout its 226-year lifespan.

The Ingraham Carriage Barn is a now rare example of an early building type—the urban carriage barn. Changes over the years included the construction of a Greek Revival style ell by 1886, repurposing to a garage by 1924, and then apartments by 1950, and demolition of the Greek revival ell in 1984.

After decades of neglect, the building was carefully rehabilitated to create a residence that retains much of the historic materials and character inside and out.

Several chapters are focused on how to identify the opportunities and challenges a particular house presents.
