Do you know how to tell if a sand dollar is alive or dead?

A live sand dollar is usually dark purple/brown and is covered in thousands of tiny, soft, fuzzy-looking spines that help it move and collect food. If you look closely, you may even see those tiny spines moving.

A dead sand dollar is the smooth, white shell most people recognize, like the one in this photo. Once it dies, the spines fall off, the sun bleaches it white, and waves often wash it onto the beach.

If you find a colorful, fuzzy sand dollar in the water or on the wet sand, it’s still alive and should be gently placed back where you found it. The white ones make beautiful beach treasures because they’ve already completed their life cycle 🧡
