THE LEGEND OF EL BLANCO

They say he’s older than the docks.

Not born — arrived. After the worst red tide the bay ever saw. When the fish floated and the air stung your eyes.

He landed on the piling near the docks and didn’t leave. Not for storms. Not for fireworks. Not even when the shrimp boats came back bloodied from the Gulf.

White as a reef bone. Eyes like glass. Beak chipped from something bigger than a snook.

He doesn’t beg. Doesn’t blink. Just watches. Judges.
Fishermen nod to him out of habit. Superstition. Maybe fear.

No one calls him by name, unless they’ve bled into the tide.

But if you ask the old timers — the ones with crab-claw hands and stories that stink of truth — they’ll tell you straight:

That bird ain’t a bird. That’s El Blanco.

And if he circles your skiff three times…
Cut the lines.
Go home.

El Blanco stays.
Watching.
Waiting.
Knowing something you don’t.
