ALBANY — As of 12:01 a.m. Friday, no fires will be allowed in any Linn County campground due to forecast high temperatures and the possibility of high winds, according to Parks Director Brian Carroll.
The National Weather Service has issued a warning that parts of the mid-valley could experience temperatures in the high 90s — possibly topping 100 degrees — with 25- to 50 mile-per-hour winds with gusts up to 60 miles-per-hour in places.
Carroll said the Willamette National Forest has also banned campfires in both developed and dispersed areas.
Carroll said the only fires allowed in developed campsites are those with an on-off switch, or that use fuels such as propane.
“Charcoal briquets and wood are not allowed,” Carroll said. “They must have a fuel source that can be shut off immediately and preferably no fire of any type.”
In addition to Linn County’s parks, this includes the U.S. Forest Services campgrounds managed by Linn County Parks along the South Santiam River near Cascadia.
Carroll said campers should also be aware that should power outages occur, some county parks will not be able to provide drinking water, or restrooms, since both water and sewage systems operate off electrically-powered pumps.
“We will see how we get through this weekend and review the no-fire rule early next week,” Carroll said.
