What is an Economic Opportunity Zone?

With the Tax Cut and Jobs Act of December 2017, a little known portion of this act created the Economic Opportunity Zone.

The IRS has identified over 8,000 census tracts where this zone classification is applicable. Why is this important?

The zone allows investors to pump money into real estate in distressed neighborhoods across America and after that asset has been acquired, rehabilitated, and sold the capital gains tax(es) are deferred because the investor took the risk of investing in a distress property within the specifically identified zone(s).
