SALT LAKE HOUSING AFFORDABILITY SLIPS in the FOURTH QUARTER

Just 49.2 percent of homes sold in the fourth quarter of 2018 in Salt Lake City were affordable to a family earning the city's median income of $80,000, according to a new report by the National Association of Home Builders.
A year ago, 62.1 percent of Salt Lake homes were affordable. And in the fourth quarter of 2016 the affordability percentage was 70.7 percent.
The index pegged Salt Lake City's median home price at $338,000 in the most recent fourth quarter. Salt Lake City was still more affordable than neighboring Denver, where only 41.9 percent of homes sold there in the fourth quarter were affordable to a family earning that city's median income.
However, cities like Phoenix, Ariz., had more affordable inventory than Salt Lake City, with 56.1 percent of its fourth quarter home sales considered affordable.
Nationally, 56.6 percent of homes sold in the fourth quarter were affordable to family earning the median income of $71,900.
The national median home price in the fourth quarter was $263,000.
