While it can be a challenge to grow a nice lawn in dense shade there are some things you can do to help. in my experience , first choose the right type of cultivar (fine fescues seem to do better) second , get a good watering schedule be careful not to overwater, the shade areas are prone to moss and lawns can stay wet longer , that can make it more susceptible to fungus. Third , get a good fertilizer program and work on soil health, this lawn is treated by the great people GreenerEase Chad and his crew are some of the best around . Lastly and in my experience one of the most noticeable differences is hight of cut. Heavy shaded areas do best when you mow tall , it makes sense if you think of the blades of grass like little solar panels , they are already starving for sunlight . If you make them even smaller that’s less surface area they have to capture light.

I made another one of my cut outs, this one is for my wife’s school , pre k graduation. Hopefully it’s gets lots of use. I enjoy doing little fun projects like this, it can’t always be about work.

Last week I was asked “how’s business and do I plan on growing? I thought about how I should have answered all week, and for me a small solo or two man operation is what I enjoy .I enjoy the personal connection I have with my clients and their properties. I actually like doing the work and enjoy doing the best I can. I love having the opportunity to hone my craft and add details like keeping my work area neat and organized. Whether it’s a clean trailer or truck or a tarp down when installing mulch I love the nuances and details of the work. I love the maintenance of equipment, finding the perfect tool, and even the book keeping. For me I have a hard time focusing on those things when working with a bigger crew. I know many really good larger companies that do great work and I send them work often. But in my situation I look for clients that prefer the personal touch of having me on the property and being able to talk to me on the phone they trust me and my small “footprint” when I’m doing work at their homes. Just like most things There are many plus and minus to having a small business. I think the key is to make sure you like what you’re doing, try your best and keep working towards that because it’s hard work and when you love it , it’s shows . Remember to have fun out there .

I’ve made posts about this before , it’s always a good topic. Here are a few photos of my trimming style. A pet peeve of mine is over edging and heavy “wall” where the lawn meets the a hard surface. My technique is to round the edge off then just tip the edge to keep it right at the curb. I see a lot of landscaping edging the soil week after week and in no time there is a huge gutter line causing a trough. You can see different angles on different lawns from today .

I’ve been mowing this lawn for nine years , you can see the gap at the curb hasn’t grown at all

A different angle, also pay attention to trimming to heavy around cobble stones , you can eventually wear away a asphalt driveway or concrete walk , leaving another gap for weeds

This lawn has no irrigation and the edge still stays true

Today’s tool highlight is spring rakes, and how I adapt and modify them to my liking . I start off with a good quality rake , maybe an Ames brand or one from Ace , next I trim the rake end of the handle to allow it to fit under the spring and then add a second bolt. This stiffens up the rake and makes it much more suitable for raking mulch in garden beds. Other things I do is remove the varnish and apply boiled linseed oil. Lastly I keep my old worn out rakes . When they loose teeth I cut the rake down to different widths to make mini rakes allowing me to get between plants much easier. I also cut the handles to different lengths or use broken handles. The short handle works great when working under plants like rhododendrons , holly or other tight spaces. I find these little adjustments really make the work more enjoyable and even benefit the outcome.

Here you can see the modified handle allowing it to pass behind the spring

A top view

The rake on the left is about 4 seasons old and has been cut down width wise and is the most used rake in the fleet

I love tools , especially hand tools with purpose and details. I crave the nuances when using certain tools on certain jobs. I’ve decided to share some of my favorite tools and make a “tool segment “ post . Maybe twice a week or something like that we’ll see how it goes . This is a tool I grew up using (it’s over 40’s old) my grandfather made it from galvanized sheet metal. I use it for everything . A dust pan in the trailer, collecting weeds in a flower bed, and spreading mulch around shrubs and perennials and anything else I can think of The handle is rubbed smooth from decades of use.
