DATA CENTERS?
As a Realtor, I walk through homes every day. And it’s interesting to think about just how much of our everyday lives now connects back to a data center somewhere.
Look around your house.
Your phone. Internet. Email. Smart TV. Streaming services. Security cameras. Video doorbell. Thermostat. Computer. Cloud storage. Banking. Credit cards. Online shopping. Package delivery. Weather apps. Smart appliances. Utilities. Gaming. Social media. And yes, AI.
And don’t forget the car you drive to work every day.
Navigation. Real-time traffic. Connected-car apps. Remote start. Vehicle diagnostics. Software updates. Satellite and streaming entertainment. EV charging networks. Even finding the closest gas station, restaurant or coffee shop.
Then there’s buying, selling and owning a home.
MLS. Property searches. Mortgage processing. Banking. Electronic signatures. Title work. Insurance. Property and tax records. Utility accounts. Security monitoring. HOA portals. Showing systems. Mapping. Photography and cloud storage.
Realtors, lenders, inspectors, appraisers, title companies, attorneys and insurance companies all use systems that depend heavily on data centers to get a transaction from “For Sale” to the closing table.
That doesn’t mean your refrigerator needs a data center to stay cold, your light switch needs one to turn on, or your car needs one simply to move down the road.
But the modern home — and the life surrounding it — has become part of a much larger digital ecosystem.
I’ve been selling real estate since 2005, and I’ve watched that transformation happen firsthand.
Twenty years ago, I was selling houses.
Today, I’m still selling houses. But the houses, the cars in their garages, and almost everything involved in buying, selling and living in them are more connected than most of us realize.
Data centers may not be something you see when you walk through the front door.
But chances are, you relied on one several times before you even got there.
