In 1930, instead of demolishing the Indiana Bell Telephone Company building, engineers did the unthinkable—they moved the entire 22-million-pound, seven-story structure 52 feet and rotated it 90 degrees over the course of 34 days. But what’s truly mind-blowing? Utilities like gas, water, and phone lines stayed connected, and all 600 employees kept working as usual—without disruption.

The building was shifted using a system of hydraulic jacks, turntables, and steam-powered winches. Engineers meticulously designed the move to happen at just 15 inches per hour, allowing staircases, pipes, and wiring to bend and flex without snapping. This legendary relocation remains a masterclass in precision civil engineering and problem-solving—even a skyscraper-sized obstacle can be moved with enough planning.
