What better time to talk about water than during a drought?

I took this photo last night while we were dove hunting. According to Oklahoma Mesonet, by August 25, every inch of Oklahoma was classified in at least moderate drought.

A pond in a property photo only tells you that it held water that day. What matters is how well it holds through a dry Oklahoma summer and how quickly it recovers when the rain returns.

Mav & Goose are mainly concerned with having enough water to get in, but years like this show why dependable water matters so much on rural land.

A pretty pond will catch your attention. A pond that continues to serve the land through dry weather is what really matters.

A load of rye cleanings from our local co-op.

If you’ve never seen rye cleanings, this is what they look like. They’re what gets cleaned out of the rye, and we use them as supplemental feed for the deer. They don’t last long once the deer find them.

Not everything we do for the land and wildlife is a big project. Sometimes it’s just using what we have available.

Opening day of dove season.

Maverick was ready to go. Goose is learning, so he spent most of the time watching Maverick, figuring out what we were doing and wondering why the heck we weren’t in the A/C.

Not a bad first dove hunt for Goose.

Same pond. Just 24 days apart.

We’ve had more than our share of 100°+ days lately, and with cattle on it, it doesn’t take long for the Oklahoma heat to start showing.

Oak Timber 26 is under contract.
