Looking west from Ohio Pass, the rock towers locals call The Castles rise out of the West Elk Wilderness.

They sit on public land in Gunnison National Forest, with Ohio Creek Road winding up from the valley toward Kebler Pass and Crested Butte. From the overlook near the pass, the formation stays out on the horizon, distant, quiet, and hard to mistake for anything else.

Long before Crested Butte South, skiers were already riding a chair up Cement Creek.

In 1939, the Gunnison Ski Club opened Pioneer Ski Area on Cement Mountain, a few miles up Cement Creek from where CB South sits today. The single chair they built, the Comet, was Colorado's first chairlift: a recycled mine tram put back to work as an aerial lift. Families, college racers and visitors came for steep runs with names like the Big Dipper and Little Dipper.

Pioneer ran into the early 1950s. The land is public Forest Service ground again, and you can still feel that early ski story when you look up Cement Creek from Crested Butte South.
