Tropical Update (Tues. JULY 21, 6a.m.)

OVERVIEW/WHAT'S NEW: As of the latest advisory, Tropical Storm Bertha was located about 130 miles south-southeast of Pensacola, moving northwest at 5 mph, with maximum sustained winds around 50 mph. The storm continues to struggle to get organized due to shear and dry air, and only little intensification is expected. However, conditions will deteriorate over the next 24 hours across portions of the local area, particularly along the coast, as the center of Bertha makes a close pass south of the coast tomorrow. Coastal and marine hazards remain the greatest concern as most of the heavy rainfall remains offshore.

KEY MESSAGES:
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for coastal Alabama and a Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for coastal northwest Florida.
A Storm Surge Watch remains in effect for coastal Alabama (including southern Mobile Bay) for storm surge potentially up to 2-4 feet. 1-2 feet of coastal inundation is also expected along the western Florida Panhandle coast.
A High risk of life-threatening rip currents exists through at least Thursday night. A High Surf Warning will be in effect from this afternoon through Wednesday night for dangerously large breaking waves of up to 8-11 ft.
Briefly heavy rain and tropical storm force winds will be possible in outer rainbands, mainly near the coast.
Shifts in the forecast track are still possible, which could lead to some minor changes in potential impacts.
