Allergies are approaching. Guard your sinuses this season so you can enjoy the gorgeous weather as much as possible!

Know yourself. If you suffer from allergies, it’s important to find out what triggers them. Get an allergy test and try to avoid the allergens that affect you most. This will also better equip you to prevent an attack. If pollen is one of your triggers, for example, you’ll be able to check the pollen count before you leave home in the morning and take preventative medication.

Create a safe space. If allergies are a big problem for you, make your home a haven from allergens. Your shoes can bring pollen indoors, so take them off before entering your home. Keep your windows closed on high-allergen days. Use air filters to reduce pet dander and other triggers. Opt for blinds instead of curtains and leather over upholstered furniture.

Food for thought. It may not be the spring air that’s triggering your allergies. A condition called pollen food allergy syndrome causes certain proteins in fruit to mimic the symptoms caused by pollens. Melons can trigger a reaction from people allergic to ragweed. This is true for fresh fruits only. Cooking these foods will neutralize the protein that causes the symptoms, so you can still enjoy your favorite fruits, just in a new form!
