I found his little guy cruising through my back yard and I could not help myself so I picked him up. A perfect specimen of an Eastern Milk Snake. That little guy was absolutely beautiful. Yes he did bite me but he figured I was too big to swallow so he gave it up.
The Milk Snake got it's name, according to an old wives tale, because of its guilt by association. If the ole milk cow started slowing up on her production, the first thing to get the blame would be a Milk Snake. Just look around and you would certainly find one. It was surely stealing the milk. I suppose they failed to consider the symptom may have been a result of a hollow belly. Well, you know that was not true but the name stuck anyway.
After admiring such a colorful and well designed creature, I began to wonder why it is that so many people find it their lot in life to kill snakes.
Seems the most common snake found around homes and outbuildings in this neck of the woods is the Gray Rat Snake. It gets much larger than a Milk Snake and can therefore consume more groceries. Do you know that an adult Rat Snake can eat more than 192 mice in one year? Do you realize that a Ramik glue trap costs about $3.00 each? That would make the average mature Rat Snake have a value of around $600.00.
Sounds like a good savings plan to me.
