Well that was a lot of rain.
If you have a basement, you either heard a sump pump doing its job or you didn't.
One of those is a good feeling. The other is a very expensive morning.
Sump pumps are like vegetables. Nobody gets excited about them. Nobody posts about them on Instagram. But when it's pouring outside at 2am, that pulsing sound from the basement is the most reassuring noise in the world.
April is here. May is coming. Now is the time to make sure you aren't one heavy rain away from a flooded basement.
A few quick things to think seriously about:
• How old is your sump pump? If you don't know, that's worth checking.
• Do you have a backup? Primary pumps fail during power outages which happen during the same storms that flood basements.
• When did you last test it? Pour a bucket of water in the pit. It should kick on immediately.
