We are hearing of several different scams involving Marketplace using pictures of Listed Properties and advertising Rental or Rent to Own programs. The Scammers will show you photos, explain the price and ask you to send them money with the promise of being able to move in after they receive the money.
We are aware of one party in the past few weeks that actually sent money and got ready to move in, only to have Relatives point out the home is listed and it was a scam.
PLEASE, PLEASE, never send anyone money without actually meeting with them and touring a true rental.
Unfortunately, there is nothing we, or local authorities can do to stop these Scammers.
Educating the public to be cautious and actually see the rental you will be living in, in person, and talking to the landlord is always the safest.

Why are pocket listings a bad idea?

First, what is a pocket listing? It’s a listing that an agent takes but doesn’t expose to the broader market. This means they don’t put it on the Multiple Listing and do not market the home to the general public. Instead, they keep it in their pocket and only tell a small group of people.
So why do we think that selling a home as a pocket listing may not be in the best interest of sellers? It’s because turning a house into a pocket listing vastly limits the exposure of the property. If you properly market your home on the MLS and to the general public, you’ll most often generate enough interest to create a bidding war. That, in turn, will help you realize your home’s highest potential price.

Takeaway; Not marketing your home to the general public will limit your buyers and will reduce the price you’ll likely get when you sell.
