The City of Cullman is making changes to its residential recycling program beginning in 2027. We know residents have questions, so here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions:
Why is the residential recycling program changing?
Over the past several years, recycling markets have become increasingly unstable. Changes in international markets, including China’s decision to stop accepting many recyclable materials, have created oversupply and contamination concerns. Regional drop-off closures have also forced the City to use more distant markets with stricter standards and higher transportation and processing costs.
Is the new residential recycling cart service mandatory?
No. The new curbside recycling service is 100% optional.
Can I keep using my 18-gallon blue recycling bin?
No. Anyone who wishes to continue curbside recycling service must switch to the new 96-gallon recycling cart and return the signup flyer/application to the Sanitation Department.
What can I recycle in the new cart?
The City will continue accepting the same recyclable materials as before, including paper, cardboard, plastics #1 and #2, tin, and aluminum.
How much does the new cart service cost?
The new curbside recycling cart service will cost $10 per month, per cart.
What if I do not want the cart but still want to recycle?
City residents may bring recyclable materials to the Recycling Center at 925 Convent Road NE at no charge. The Recycling Center is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.
What will happen to the blue recycling bins?
The Sanitation Department will collect and remove blue recycling bins placed at the curb during the final week of the current bin service, January 25 through January 28.
What if I do not want any recycling services?
City residents can continue using their trash cart as always. No recycling cart will be delivered, and there is no need to return the signup flyer/application to the Sanitation Department.
