Love this shot taken from Camden Avenue!

See all the identical houses? These are known as “Kelly homes”. These saltbox style homes were built for employees of the Kelly Springfield plant (located near the current YMCA). These homes now make up the majority of Gephart Drive as well as the ends of Washington and Fayette Streets. The barren hillside in the background is now Gephart Drive, Cleveland Avenue, etc.

This home was designed by Wright Butler, a prominent local architect and built in 1901 for Col. George A. Pearre.

Wright Butler designed the Allegany County Courthouse and the Masonic Temple, as well as many other local landmarks. George Pearre was a member of the Maryland State Senate and US Representative from the Maryland 6th District.
