That’s the math Shalini Karnani Bonjour ran when her mom moved from Michigan to California, and chose independence over a facility.
She built a 1,100 sq ft ADU in her own backyard instead.
Most people frame ADUs as rental investments. The math looks different when the person moving in is your mother.
Avg assisted living: $72K to $96K / year
ADU build: $200K to $350K, one time
Payback in 3 to 4 years. After that: net positive.
