Last Friday, our Apex Homes team was at the Housing & Development Forum at the Sunnyvale Community Center โ hosted by SBA Small Builders Association and the CAREA CAREA_official Chinese Real Estate Association of America
It was a packed room. Policymakers, builders, lenders, and industry professionals from across California, all in one place for one reason: more housing, faster.
Featured speakers included California State Treasurer Fiona Ma (Fiona Ma ), California State Assembly Member Patrick Ahrens (Patrick Ahrens ), Sunnyvale Council member Murali Srinivasan (Murali Srinivasan ), Sunnyvale City Mayor Larry Klein (Larry Klein )and the panels covered state housing policy, market opportunities, and how new legislation is turning into real decisions on the ground.
That last part is exactly where we live. The conversations got into what we work through with homeowners every single day โ state housing rules becoming real city decisions. Zoning. Permits. Financing. Insurance. The kind of obstacles most people donโt realize they are walking into until they are already deep in a project.
We know these obstacles personally. On our first ADU condo, we had to navigate a brand-new legal structure, a challenging parcel map and condominium certification process, limited financing options, and a lot of unknowns. Not because it was easy, but because we have been doing this long enough to know where the problems hide.
These are the same things we help homeowners work through, one project at a time. It is also why SBA exists: to connect the missing dots, so no homeowner has to walk into this alone.
So weโre curious ๐
Whatโs your biggest challenge when it comes to building an ADU? Zoning? Permits? Financing? Something nobody warned you about?
Drop it in the comments, or reach out anytime. Weโre happy to help, and SBA already lined up the resources for you.
Thank you to SBA, CAREA, Treasurer Fiona Ma, and everyone who showed up to push this work forward. We can not do this alone.
Every unit counts.
