Ever felt like your job was overtaking your personal life? I've been there. More importantly, I was the one letting it happenโฆ
As a realtor in the ever-changing Southern California landscape, I was the "yes" man.
Calls at odd hours? Yes.
Working weekends? Yes.
Sacrificing personal time for closing the next big deal? A big fat yes.
Yes, yes, yes.
While I'm thankful for these experiences shaping me, it also meant they defined me.
Work-life 'balance'? Not really. Boundaries? Absolutely. They exist even when we can't see them.
Here's a pivotal moment - I was at a cozy restaurant with Pamela, my ku'uipo. My phone rings. It's a client, insisting on seeing a property right then. I wasn't even near the area. Still, my reflex was to say 'yes'.
But glancing at Pamela, I hesitated. I answered, "I can't right now, I'm out of the area. Can we schedule for tomorrow morning?"
Their response stung, "No, I want to see it today. If you can't, I'll find an agent with time for me."
Resentment swelled, but I quelled it. Excused myself, and drove to show the property.
That 'yes' was my wakeup call. I realized I needed to create space for my personal life too.
Even now, in leaner business periods, it's a struggle. The fear of losing clients is real, but so is the need for personal time.
Now, I'm still chasing my professional goals, but I'm also prioritizing life outside work. My family, my friends, my personal growth, they all matter.
So here's some wisdom - Begin with 'yes', embrace opportunities. As you grow, learn to say 'no'. Set your boundaries early on, cherish your peace. And remember, it's a continuous journey, friends!
