- The Art of Conversation (Pits) -

Before open concepts and oversized sectionals, there was the conversation pit.

Popularized in the 1950s–70s, these sunken living rooms were designed to bring people together — creating a cozy, intimate space for gathering without the need for walls. The design became a symbol of modern luxury and quickly found its way into celebrity homes, upscale hotels, and futuristic architecture of the era.

Many conversation pits were intentionally built around fireplaces to make the space feel even more intimate and social. Some designers called them “floating rooms” because the lowered floor created separation without fully closing off the space.

By the 1980s, they began fading out in favor of more traditional layouts, but lately they’ve been making a quiet comeback in contemporary homes and boutique spaces with softer curves, earthy textures, and minimalist styling.

Some trends disappear. Others just wait for the right time to return✨

Your Quarter 2 magazine has arrived and it’s filled with all of the DFW goodness we could dream up! ✨

We hope this issue finds its way into your home and lands on your coffee table, bedside table, and of course… your lap; perhaps accompanied by your favorite mug filled with your favorite coffee.

Curious about this issue’s cover?

Meet the artist: Rachel Larlee 🖼️

Tucked into the heart of Casa Linda, Rachel Larlee Studio is a space where heritage, texture, and storytelling come to life.

Rachel, a mixed media artist and educator with roots in the Devon countryside of England, creates work shaped by memory, tradition, and the women who came before her. Through the interplay of watercolor and stitch, she explores contrast between fluidity and control, softness and structure, reflecting themes of identity, healing, and connection.

Her studio feels just as intentional as her work. Filled with pieces brought from England and layered alongside her own, it feels collected rather than curated, where vintage textures meet modern design and every corner holds something unexpected.

Beyond creating, Rachel opens her doors for classes and workshops, offering others a place to grow their own creative practice.

We’re excited for you to have issue 2 officially in your hands! 🎉
