Fire Prevention Awareness

Safety is a team effort, and staying prepared is our best line of defense. As part of our ongoing commitment to keeping our community secure, here is your monthly fire prevention reminder. While fire hazards can often be hidden in plain sight, taking a few moments today to review these essential safety protocols can make all the difference in an emergency.

Kitchen Safety:
β€’ Never leave cooking unattended. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food.
β€’ If you have to leave the kitchen for any reason, turn off the oven/stove. Unattended cooking is the number one cause of kitchen fires.
β€’ Never put water on a grease fire. This will only increase the fire. To extinguish a grease fire, you should turn off the heat source, then cover the flames with a metal lid or fire blanket to smother the oxygen supply.
β€’ Keep flammable items away from your stovetop and always turn off burners and ovens when you're done.
β€’ Cook with Caution. Stay alert. If you're sleepy or have consumed alcohol, do not use the stove or stovetop.
β€’ When simmering, baking, or roasting, check your food regularly and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking. Remain in the home while the food is cooking.
β€’ Cook with the right equipment. If you are trying to cook something for the first time, check a recipe or research the right kind of pots, pans or other equipment you need to cook that dish.

Electrical Safety:
β€’ Don't overload outlets.
β€’ Use surge protectors for electronics and unplug appliances when not in use.
β€’ Avoid running cords under rugs or furniture.

Candles and Open Flames:
β€’ Never leave them unattended, keep them away from anything flammable, and extinguish them before leaving a room or going to sleep.
β€’ Consider using flameless LED candles as a safer alternative.

Smoke Detectors:
β€’ Make sure your smoke detectors are working. Test them regularly and replace batteries as needed.
β€’ If you are unsure if your smoke detector is working or one is missing from your unit, please submit a service request for your onsite maintenance team to inspect.
_________________________________

In Case of a Fire:
β€’ Grease fire on the stovetop: Smother the flames by carefully sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. Never throw water on a grease fire. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled. You can also use baking soda to put out a grease fire.
β€’ Have a fire extinguisher. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know how to use it. If your unit does not come with a fire extinguisher, please locate the nearest extinguisher provided at your community. These are typically located in common area hallways, interior/exterior vestibules, etc.
β€’ Oven fire: Turn off the heat and keep the door closed to smother the flames.
β€’ When in doubt, get out! If you are unsure about fighting a small fire, just get out of the home immediately. Close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
β€’ Call for help. Once you are safely outside, call 9-1-1, followed by your community's emergency number.

Keep a Safe Environment:
β€’ Keep flammable items away. Move anything that can catch fireβ€”like oven mitts, towels, wooden utensils, food packaging, or curtainsβ€”away from your stovetop.
β€’ Wear appropriate clothing. Wear short, close-fitting, or tightly rolled sleeves while cooking, as loose clothing can easily catch fire.
β€’ Turn handles inward. To prevent hot pots or pans from being bumped or knocked over, turn their handles toward the back of the stove.
β€’ Clean regularly. Regularly clean your stove, oven, and other cooking surfaces to prevent the buildup of grease and food residue, which can be a fire hazard.
β€’ Use caution with electricity. Plug cooking appliances directly into a wall outlet and avoid using extension cords. Keep electrical cords tucked away from the stove and out of the reach of children.
β€’ Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the stove and areas where hot food is being prepared or carried.
β€’ Keep electric scooters, e-bikes, e-boards and other electric motorized methods of transportation outside of your home.

For more information on fire prevention or best habits in your new home, please reach out to your community’s leasing office and/or maintenance team.
Sincerely,
