In 1677, King Jan III Sobieski of Poland began construction on Wilanów Palace in Warsaw, complete with a vast network of underground tunnels used for cisterns, irrigation, and storage. But at the dawn of the 19th century, the palace came under the ownership of a nobleman named Stanisław Kostka Potocki — who allegedly repurposed those tunnels for secret Freemason meetings and rituals.

A powerful Freemason who held the title of Grand Master of the Grand National Orient of Poland, Potocki was said to have held clandestine ceremonies in these subterranean passages, which he allegedly also turned into catacombs to fill with the bodies of his fellow Masons. And while much of this remains shrouded in mystery to this day, archaeologists have begun excavating the tunnels in hopes of learning the full story. Recent excavations have just uncovered walls surrounding the tunnel's entrance, coins dating back to the 17th century, and alcoves in the walls that lend credence to the catacombs story that's captivated locals for decades. The term "zombie mortgage" emerged during the 2008 housing crisis. It specifically refers to situations where homeowners mistakenly believe that their mortgage was resolved through bankruptcy, loan modifications, or other processes, only to later be pursued for payment. This often happens with second mortgages that were not properly discharged or recorded, leaving the borrower vulnerable to debt collectors years later, sometimes after long periods of inactivity from lenders.

These mortgages became particularly prevalent as housing prices dropped, and many homeowners fell into negative equity, leading to foreclosures or abandoned second loans. Lenders or debt collectors might resurface to claim unpaid amounts, creating a "zombie" debt situation, https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/blog/zombie-second-mortgages-when-collectors-come-for-long-forgotten-home-loans/ .

Help is available for homeowners who took out second mortgages years ago, and believed their loans were either forgiven or modified into a single loan, and now are being targeted by debt collectors threatening foreclosure.
