🌴 ONLY IN ST. THOMAS… What Are Those Little Safari Taxis? 😂🚐

You’ve landed in St. Thomas, you’re riding down the road, and suddenly you see what looks like a pickup truck… with rows of benches in the back… packed with people enjoying the Caribbean breeze.

Welcome to the St. Thomas safari taxi! 🇻🇮🌺

These open-air taxis are just part of everyday island life, and honestly, they’re one of those things that make you realize pretty quickly…

You’re definitely not on the mainland anymore. 😂

Safari taxis are used for sightseeing tours, cruise ship excursions, traditional taxi rides, and even local transportation around certain parts of the island.

A few things to know before you hop aboard:

☀️ There’s usually no air-conditioning — Mother Nature handles that.

🌬️ Your hair may not survive the ride, but the views are worth it.

⛰️ St. Thomas roads are steep, curvy, and full of personality, so consider the ride part transportation… part adventure.

💵 Always confirm where the safari is going and what the fare will be before climbing in.

And yes, when you’re sitting in the back, catching the breeze, looking out over that beautiful blue Caribbean water, you might find yourself thinking…

“Why don’t we have these back home?” 🌊😂

That’s island life.

A little different.
A little adventurous.
And a whole lot of fun. 💙

At Two Tickets to Paradise Cottage, we love sharing these little “Only in St. Thomas” moments so our guests know what to expect before they arrive.

Because around here, even the taxi ride can become part of the vacation. 🌴🚐🌺

🌦️ WHAT DOES A 30% CHANCE OF RAIN MEAN IN ST. THOMAS? 🌴

If you’re planning your St. Thomas vacation and your weather app suddenly shows 30% chance of rain, don’t start canceling the beach day just yet. 😉

A 30% chance of rain means there is a 30% probability that measurable rain will fall at your specific location during that forecast period. It does not mean it will rain for 30% of the day. (National Weather Service)

And here in the islands, weather can be incredibly localized.

It may be raining on one side of St. Thomas while the sun is shining beautifully on another. You might watch a shower pass across the water from your beach chair, get five or ten minutes of rain where you are, and then be right back to blue skies and sunshine. 🌈☀️

That’s one of the reasons we always tell our guests:

Don’t let a little rain cloud on the weather app scare you.

Pack the sunscreen.
Grab your beach bag.
Take the Jeep.
And go enjoy the island. 🌴

Unless we’re watching a significant tropical system, a little rain in the forecast usually doesn’t mean an entire rainy day in paradise.

And truthfully? Sometimes one of the prettiest sights in St. Thomas is watching a tropical shower move across the Caribbean while you’re sitting somewhere completely dry with a cocktail in your hand. 🍹🌧️🌊

So when your app says 30% chance of rain, remember…

You’re in the tropics. Give it a few minutes. Paradise is probably still waiting on the other side of that cloud. ❤️🌴

✈️🌴 WHY IS AIRPORT DAY DIFFERENT IN ST. THOMAS? 🌴✈️

One of the questions we hear from guests at Two Tickets to Paradise Cottage is:

“Do we REALLY need to get to the airport three hours early?”

Our answer? Yes. Especially when you’re flying from St. Thomas back to the mainland. 😂

Airport day in the USVI is a little different from what you may be used to at home, so here’s what to expect when it’s time to say goodbye to paradise. 💙

First, remember that Cyril E. King Airport is a relatively small island airport handling a whole lot of travelers. When several mainland flights are leaving around the same time, things can get busy quickly.

And unlike most domestic airports, there are a few extra stops along the way.

🌿 AGRICULTURE INSPECTION
Before heading back to the mainland, your luggage may need to go through an agricultural inspection. The USDA restricts certain fruits, vegetables, plants, soil and other agricultural items from traveling from the USVI to the mainland because they can carry pests or diseases. All agricultural items should be declared and presented for inspection. (APHIS)

🛂 U.S. CUSTOMS & BORDER PROTECTION
Yes, St. Thomas is part of the United States, but travelers departing the USVI for the mainland are processed through federal inspection here before departure. That is one more step that you normally don’t encounter when flying between two mainland cities.

🧳 AIRLINE CHECK-IN & BAGS
You’ll still need to check bags, get through your airline’s ticket counter if necessary, and make sure you haven’t missed its cutoff time. The Virgin Islands Port Authority specifically reminds travelers that airline ticketing and federal services can close earlier than the terminal itself. (VI Port Authority)

👟 THEN COMES TSA
After agriculture, Customs and airline check-in, you still have regular airport security to get through.

And here’s the important part…

Our airport isn’t huge, so when those lines stack up, there isn’t always another counter, another checkpoint or another terminal to absorb the crowd.

That is why we tell our guests:

⏰ PLAN TO ARRIVE ABOUT THREE HOURS BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE.

Could you sometimes get through much faster? Absolutely.

But vacation is supposed to end with you reminiscing about your favorite beach and planning your next trip to St. Thomas…

not sprinting through the airport yelling, “HOLD THE PLANE!” 😂✈️

A few Two Tickets tips for departure day:

🌴 Don’t try to squeeze in “one last beach” if it makes your schedule tight.
🧳 Have your ID and travel documents easily accessible.
🍍 Be mindful about bringing fresh produce, plants or other agricultural items home.
💧 Give yourself time, especially on busy travel days and weekends.
✈️ Check your airline’s current recommendations and flight status before leaving the cottage.

And don’t worry — when you’re staying with us, Steve and I will help you plan airport day too. We know leaving paradise is painful enough. We’re going to do our best to make everything leading up to that flight as easy as possible. ❤️

So when we say three hours early, trust your island hosts on this one.

Better to have a little extra time at the airport than watch your airplane leave without you. 😉

🌴 CAN I GO TO WATER ISLAND FOR THE DAY? 🌴

Absolutely — and it’s one of our favorite easy little island adventures from Two Tickets to Paradise Cottage! 💙

Water Island is just a quick ferry ride away from St. Thomas, but it feels like you’ve escaped to another little corner of paradise.

⛴️ HOW DO YOU GET THERE?
The Water Island ferry leaves from Crown Bay Marina and takes you over to Phillips Landing on Water Island. The ride is short and easy, and ferries run throughout the day. Current visitor fare is $10 each way per adult, but schedules and fares can change, so Steve and I will always help our guests check the latest information before heading out. (Water Island Ferry)

🚕 OPTION #1: HEAD STRAIGHT TO HONEYMOON BEACH
Once you arrive, you can often catch the ride down toward beautiful Honeymoon Beach. The ride has traditionally been complimentary, but we always recommend bringing a few dollars to tip your driver. Island hospitality deserves a little love! ❤️

🏝️ OPTION #2: RENT A GOLF CART!
Want to make a whole day of it? Rent a golf cart and explore Water Island on your own schedule. Cruise around, take in the views, explore the island, and eventually make your way back down to Honeymoon Beach.

🍴 If you have the golf cart, make a stop at Heidi’s Honeymoon Grill up the hill. It’s a fun little island spot with beautiful views and some seriously good food. Hours can vary, so checking before you go is a smart idea. (Virgin Islands Campground)

🌊 THEN IT’S HONEYMOON BEACH TIME!

One of the best parts about taking the ferry? You don’t need to haul all of our cottage beach chairs and gear with you. Beach amenities and rentals are available right there, so travel light! Dinghy’s also offers beach amenities along with snorkeling, paddleboarding and more. (Dinghy’s Beach Bar)

What WOULD I take?

🧊 Our cooler packed with your favorite drinks
🤿 Your snorkel gear
🧴 Sunscreen
💵 A little cash for tips
😎 And your island attitude!

You’ll also be steps away from Dinghy’s Beach Bar & Grill, right on Honeymoon Beach. Grab some lunch and maybe treat yourself to an island cocktail. Their menu even includes a Painkiller-style Dinghy Fever and the famous peanut-butter-and-chocolate Paddlewacker. 🍹😋 (Dinghy’s Beach Bar)

And keep those eyes on the water! 🐢 Honeymoon Beach can be a wonderful place to snorkel and you just might get lucky enough to spot one of our beautiful sea turtles cruising by.

This is exactly what vacation in the Virgin Islands should feel like — wake up on St. Thomas, hop on a ferry, spend the day exploring another island, have lunch with your toes in the sand, snorkel turquoise water and ferry home before dinner.

And as always, when you stay at Two Tickets to Paradise Cottage, Steve and I will make sure you know where to catch the ferry, which schedule to use, golf cart information and everything else you need to enjoy your Water Island adventure.

🌴 St. Thomas is home base…but paradise is all around us. 🌴

⛴️🌴 ST. JOHN FOR THE DAY — PEOPLE FERRY OR CAR FERRY? 🌴⛴️

One of the absolute BEST parts about staying at Two Tickets to Paradise Cottage is how easy it is to add another island to your vacation! 💙 St. John is just a short ferry ride away from St. Thomas, and there are two great ways to do it.

🚶‍♀️ TAKE THE PASSENGER FERRY

Want something simple, easy and affordable? Head to Red Hook, hop on the passenger ferry, and about 15 minutes later you’re stepping off in Cruz Bay! (Virgin Islands)

And here’s the fun part — you really don’t need a car. Taxis are readily available around Cruz Bay and can take you to beaches, restaurants and other popular spots around St. John.

The passenger ferry is also PERFECT for something I think everyone should do at least once on vacation…

✨ Take a boat to another island just for dinner! ✨

Seriously — when would you ever do that at home? 😂 Get dressed up, catch the ferry over to St. John, walk around Cruz Bay, have cocktails and an amazing dinner, then catch the ferry back to St. Thomas. That’s the kind of vacation memory you’ll talk about for years.

🚙 TAKE THE CAR FERRY

If your plan is to make a full day of it — exploring, beach hopping, stopping at overlooks and moving at your own pace — the car ferry might be your winner.

Drive onto the barge in Red Hook and take your vehicle with you to St. John. Once you arrive, YOU are in charge of the adventure. Want to spend the morning at one beach and the afternoon at another? Stop for lunch? Pull over because you spotted an incredible view? Go for it! 🌊☀️

One very important tip: car-ferry companies and schedules can vary, so know which ferry you’re using, keep that return ticket/receipt handy, and double-check the return schedule before wandering off for the day. (Virgin Islands)

So which one should you choose?

🌴 Passenger ferry: easy, inexpensive, perfect for Cruz Bay, dinner, drinks or a simple day trip.

🚙 Car ferry: perfect for exploring, beach hopping and having the freedom to make your own schedule.

And remember — Steve and I are your hosts AND your island helpers. ❤️ We’ll make sure you have the information you need, help you understand the ferries and give you our favorite ideas for making the most of your St. John day.

After all…you came all this way to the Virgin Islands.

Why visit only ONE island? 😉🌴⛴️

🦌 DRIVING ST. THOMAS: WATCH FOR OUR DEER 🦌

Yesterday while driving, Steve and I spotted a mama deer with two little ones making their way down the road — such a beautiful island moment, but also a great reminder for our visitors.

Driving in St. Thomas already takes a little extra attention. Our roads can be winding, narrow, steep, and sometimes full of surprises. One more thing to keep on your radar? The deer that call our island home.

They can appear suddenly along roadsides, around curves, or near brush and hillside areas, and where you see one, there may be others close behind.

A few simple reminders while exploring St. Thomas:

🚙 Slow down, especially on winding roads and around blind curves
🦌 Keep an eye on the shoulders and roadside vegetation
🌅 Be extra alert early in the morning and around dusk
⚠️ If you see one deer, assume more may be nearby
💛 Give wildlife plenty of space and never try to approach or feed them

Part of enjoying St. Thomas is sharing this beautiful island with the wildlife that lives here too.

So take your time, enjoy the drive, soak in the views — and keep an eye out for a few four-legged locals along the way. 🌴🦌💙

🌙🌵 A Little Island Magic at Two Tickets to Paradise Cottage 🌵🌙

If you’re staying with us during the month of August, keep your eyes open after the sun goes down… because you just might get lucky enough to witness one of St. Thomas’ most beautiful little surprises. 🤍

This incredible flower is a night-blooming cereus, a tropical climbing cactus that produces huge, gorgeous white blooms. And here’s what makes it so special:

✨ Each individual flower blooms for only ONE NIGHT!

The flower usually begins opening around dusk, reaches its full beauty during the night, and by morning the show is basically over. Its pale color and sweet fragrance are designed to attract nighttime pollinators like moths and bats.

That means you can walk past this cactus all year long and never realize the spectacular surprise it has waiting inside. Then, one evening… BOOM! Island magic. 🌺✨

We spotted this beautiful bloom right here on the property along with several buds getting ready for their own big night.

So if you’re visiting Two Tickets to Paradise Cottage in August, add this to your island bucket list: take an evening walk, look closely at the tropical plants around you, and see if Mother Nature decides to put on a show.

Sometimes the best parts of vacation aren’t on an itinerary. They’re the unexpected little moments you happen to catch. 💚🌴

💵 Travel Tip: What Currency Do We Use in St. Thomas? 🌴

Good news—if you’re traveling to St. Thomas from the mainland U.S., there’s no currency exchange needed! 🇺🇸 We use the U.S. dollar, and most restaurants, shops, grocery stores, and attractions accept major credit cards.

But here’s one little travel tip we always like to share with our guests at Two Tickets to Paradise Cottage: bring some cash—especially small bills.

💵 $1s, $5s, $10s and $20s can come in very handy for tipping.

Our island is filled with hardworking people who help make your vacation special—servers and bartenders, taxi drivers, excursion crews, boat captains and mates, baggage handlers, tour guides, housekeeping staff and so many others. For many people working in the service industry, tips are an important part of their income, and cash tips are especially appreciated.

You certainly don’t need to carry a wallet full of cash around St. Thomas, but having a little “tip money” tucked away makes things much easier.

🌴 Paradise Tip: Before you leave home, grab a stack of small bills. That way, when someone helps make your day in paradise a little more special, you’re ready to show your appreciation.

A smile, a thank-you and a thoughtful tip go a long way. ❤️

Good morning from Two Tickets to Paradise Cottage! ☀️🌴

The sun is just coming up over beautiful Hull Bay, peeking through our gorgeous red flamboyant tree, and the view from the patio this morning is exactly why we love calling St. Thomas home. ❤️🌺

It’s shaping up to be a beautiful Tuesday in paradise, and we just wanted to send a little island sunshine your way.

Wherever you’re waking up this morning, we hope you have a wonderful day and an even better rest of the week.

Cheers from St. Thomas! 🥂🌴☀️

🏝️ MAGENS BAY — IS IT REALLY WORTH ALL THE HYPE? 🏝️

If you’re planning a stay at Two Tickets to Paradise, chances are you’ve already heard about Magens Bay. It’s the beach everyone talks about, the one you see in travel photos, and the one visitors tell you that you have to see.

So… is it really worth the hype?

Our answer: YES! At least once. 💙

Magens Bay is consistently recognized among the most beautiful beaches in the world and is often included in those coveted “Top 10” beach lists. With its gorgeous horseshoe-shaped bay, soft sand, lush green hills and calm turquoise water, it’s easy to understand why. (US Virgin Islands)

And Magens offers a little bit of everything:

🌴 A long stretch of beach perfect for walking
💦 Calm, clear water that’s wonderful for floating and swimming
🏄 Kayaks and paddleboards for a little adventure
🍹 Food and drinks available right at the beach
🥪 Plenty of room to settle in for a full beach day
🥾 Hiking trails if you want to explore beyond the sand (Magens Bay Authority)

Two Tickets Tip: Magens can get busy, especially when several cruise ships are in port. Go earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon and you may get to experience an entirely different, much quieter Magens.

And there’s just something special about floating in that calm blue water, looking back at those green hills and thinking…

“Yep. I’m in St. Thomas.” 🌴☀️

There are plenty of incredible beaches on our island, and we absolutely encourage our guests to explore several of them — but if this is your first trip to St. Thomas, Magens Bay deserves a spot on your beach list.

And with Black Dog, your complimentary Two Tickets Jeep, getting there is part of the adventure! 🚙🏝️
