Before it was Builders of Hope, it was Voice of Hope.

In 1998, Norman Henry was running two organizations in West Dallas at once. A staff of 14. More than 320 volunteers. An $800,000 budget. And before a single home was built, he was running Project REACH, helping young men on probation find work and a way forward.

Norman went on to serve as president of the Texas Association of CDCs. His work was recognized in the Congressional Record.

Twenty-eight years later we're still building.

Beginning in 1940 and resuming in 1950, more than a dozen dynamite bombings targeted Black families who had bought homes in previously white South Dallas neighborhoods. The first of the 1950 wave came in February, near Exline Park. The attacks continued for two years.

Police were ordered to patrol those homes every five minutes. Thirteen people were eventually indicted. Only one was ever tried. No one was ever convicted.

But Black Dallas organized anyway. The Dallas Negro Chamber of Commerce, now the Dallas Black Chamber, pushed until 233 acres were purchased in 1953 to create Hamilton Park, where families could finally buy homes with federal backing. It still stands today.

Dallas has a long history of deciding who gets to own. This city also has a long history of families pushing back.

That's the work we're still doing.

It happens more often than people realize.

A parent or grandparent passes away, the family keeps living in the house, and the title never gets transferred. Years go by. Then the family finds out they can't get a repair grant, can't claim a homestead exemption, and can't sell or pass the home down, because on paper it still belongs to someone who is gone.

Builders of Hope CDC and Wesley-Rankin Community Center are hosting two free Property Inheritance Workshops this fall, in partnership with SMU Dedman School of Law Legal Clinics. You'll learn the steps to secure your property rights as an heir, and afterward volunteer attorneys and law students will answer your questions one-on-one.

Delores and Jerry Green thought they would outlive their house.

On Aug. 17, they got the keys to a brand new home.

It's the first of 10 being built through the Farmers Branch Housing Replacement Program, a partnership between Dallas County, the and Builders of Hope CDC, funded by $2.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act dollars. The remaining nine arecoming early September.

Delores has lived in Farmers Branch for 71 years. From her new front door she can point to where the old elementary school used to be.

Ten families. Ten brand new homes. Zero cost to them.

The Valwood Park Revitalization Project replaced homes that were beyond repair with new construction for families at or below 80% AMI. Every homeowner picked their own finishes, from the flooring to the paint on the walls.

Last week, a ribbon cutting celebration recognized one of ten Farmers Branch families that are receiving a brand new home at no cost to them, through a $2.5 million partnership between Dallas County, the City of Farmers Branch and Builders of Hope CDC.

Every family chose their own finishes. Several homes were built with ADA accessibility. All of them stayed in the neighborhood they already called home.

This is why we build.
