This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

From all of us at Garfield Public/Private, we extend our gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to the families who carry their legacy forward.

My Naval Academy Class of 1966 had the most KIA of any class since 1945. Viet Nam was standing in our way. Including those who perished in operational events we lost a total of 36 classmates. We remember and honor our departed brothers this Memorial Day and every day throughout the year. Fair winds and following seas.

Congratulations to Mayor Rick Stopfer on completing his third term as Mayor of Irving, Texas. In 2018 we had the opportunity to join the Mayor at the Topping Out Ceremony for the Westin Irving Convention Center Hotel. His strong and capable leadership played a significant role in making this development a great success. Garfield Public/Private sends thanks and best wishes to a very consequential Mayor.

Next up in our Timeline series, we’re taking a look at the Overton Hotel and Conference Center. The 303-room, full-service hotel and 47,000-square-foot conference center was developed by Garfield, and is across from Texas Tech University and Jones AT&T Stadium in Overton Park in Lubbock.

The hotel was financed with private debt and equity, and City bonds were issued to finance the conference center. Garfield led the effort to secure $11 million in private philanthropy, which reduced the amount of necessary City support to complete the capital stack.

The City of Lubbock leases the conference center on a long-term basis to the hotel owner, which operates the property. This development is an example of how Garfield Public/Private creates innovative public-private financing models that bring large-scale projects to life.

Hilton Hotels, Garfield Public/Private, and the City of Abilene, Texas break ground on the DoubleTree by Hilton Convention Center Headquarters Hotel in downtown Abilene. Designed by BOKA Powell Architects and to be constructed by DPR Construction, this hotel is Branded and will be Operated by Hilton.

With a turn of a mound of dirt on a chilly Friday morning, the dream of a downtown convention center hotel found itself, at last, on solid ground.
