Dallas county was named for the 11th Vice President of the United States, George Mifflin Dallas. Dallas County encompasses many communities, including the city of Dallas which acts as the county seat. The county's population is 2,368,139 (2010 census) and a growth rate of 6.7% was experienced from 2000-2010. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 908 square miles. 880

square miles is land and 29 square miles (3.19%) is water. The county is governed by a Commissioners Court consisting of the County Judge, who is elected County-wide, and four Commissioners who are elected by the voters in each of four districts. The County Judge serves as the chairperson of the Court. The Commissioners Court is responsible for adopting the budget for the county, setting the tax rate, approving county contracts and establishing the 4 P's - county policies, programs, projects, and priorities. There are 81 elected officials in Dallas County.
