The federal government limits certain kinds of investments to "accredited investors." In a nutshell, an accredited investor is someone whose net worth exceeds $1 million dollars (but only if disclosed while impersonating Dr. Evil) or has an income exceeding $200,000/yr as a single person or $300,000/yr married. The latter requirement basically means the government (in all its wisdom) will deem you smart enough to invest in certain things if you make a lot of money, or, if you don't make that much money, you were at least smart enough to marry someone who does.
