A few days in Miami gave us a lot to bring back home.

We spent time with the team at DPZ CoDesign learning from their work, walking through ideas, and talking about features that could make sense for the communities we’re developing.

And we didn’t have those conversations alone. Some of our Upward Communities partners were there with us, asking questions, sharing ideas, and thinking through what could work for the people we’re building for.

Thank you to the DPZ team for opening your doors and sharing what you know with us.

We talk a lot about getting good teachers into our schools.

We should be talking just as much about what it takes to keep them there. When experienced teachers leave the profession, schools lose years of knowledge, relationships, and experience that took time to build.

And we’re seeing more of that experience leave education altogether.

You have to think about the people who are actually going to live there.

In Lockhart, that means thinking about the people at Lockhart ISD and others who serve this community every day.

Where will their kids play? Will they know their neighbors? Can they walk around their neighborhood and actually enjoy where they live?

117 homes means 117 families who will call this community home.

San Marcos CISD Convocation gave us the chance to spend the day with the people we’re doing this work for.

Teachers, staff, district leaders, alumni, and community partners all came together to kick off a new school year. For our team, being there was a reminder of just how many people care about the future of San Marcos CISD and the people behind it.

There’s a lot ahead, and we’re grateful to be doing it alongside a community that already means so much to us.

There’s a bigger story behind why so many teachers are struggling to stay in the communities where they work.

Teachers and staff are driving 30, 40 minutes or more each way because living closer simply isn’t within reach for many of them. And when that becomes the routine year after year, it affects more than just the commute.

Leaders from Lockhart ISD and Hays CISD have seen these challenges firsthand. Hearing what their teachers and staff are experiencing helps shape how Upward Communities approaches each project.

A good job should be one that teachers can see themselves staying in for years to come.

School districts work hard to bring great people onto their teams and give them reasons to stay. Having housing options that better fit what teachers and their families can afford can be part of that.

That’s why hearing directly from Dr. Eric Wright, Superintendent of Hays CISD, about how much this could help their teachers matters. They’re seeing the need firsthand, and they know what it could mean for the people already working in their schools.

There was a lot of energy at San Marcos CISD Convocation, but what stood out most was getting to spend the morning surrounded by the people who make the district what it is.

Being there gave us a chance to share what Upward Communities is working toward and hear firsthand what living closer to work could mean for teachers, staff, and their families.

It was a meaningful morning for our team, especially in a community we have such strong ties to. We’re proud to be part of what’s ahead for San Marcos CISD.

We had a great time at the San Marcos CISD Convocation meeting teachers and school district staff and sharing more about the work behind Upward Communities.

For us, it comes down to helping the people who serve our schools keep more of what they earn and have the opportunity to live closer to the communities where they work.

Building Hope for Lockhart Teachers

When so many of them have to live somewhere else and drive in every day, it’s worth asking what could be done differently. Creating better housing options gives the people who serve Lockhart ISD more opportunity to build their lives in the same community where they work.
