At first glance, it just looks like an empty table. One chair pushed in. One plate untouched. One glass turned over. But every item on the POW/MIA table tells the story of an American service member who never made it home.
The white tablecloth represents the purity of their intentions when they answered the call to serve. The single red rose reminds us of the families still waiting and the sacrifices made in defense of our country. The candle stands for hope, because for many families, hope was all they had left.
The slice of lemon on the plate symbolizes the bitter fate endured by those captured or missing. The salt represents the tears shed by loved ones over the years. The glass is placed upside down because the missing cannot raise a toast with us today. And the empty chair… that chair says more than words ever could.
Memorial Day is often associated with long weekends, backyard BBQs, and time with family. But before the grills are lit and the celebrations begin, it is important to remember why the day exists in the first place. Memorial Day is not just about a day off. It is about sacrifice. It is about the men and women who gave everything for a country they believed in, and for the freedoms we sometimes take for granted.
For many, this table is tradition. For others, it is personal. It is a reminder that freedom has always come at a cost, and that some stories never received an ending.
