Stokes County History

Do you know the story of the Sauratown Woman?

Discovered in 1972 in the village of Upper Sauratown (present-day Stokes County, NC), Sara as she’s come to be known was estimated to be between 18 and 21 years old. She was buried with numerous artifacts, suggesting she held high status in her matrilineal society.

Three hundred years later, Sara’s discovery fostered interdisciplinary collaboration between the North Carolina Office of State Archaeology and others to help tell her story and the story of her people.

The Sauratown Woman statue is currently housed in secure storage at the North Carolina Museum of History while the building undergoes renovations.
