Simply put, equity is the portion of your home's value that you actually own.

If your home is worth $300,000 and you still owe $200,000 on your mortgage, you have roughly $100,000 in equity.

Over time, that number can grow as:

💰 You pay down your mortgage

But here's an important distinction: equity isn't the same as the amount of cash you'll receive when you sell. Your actual proceeds depend on your final sale price, remaining mortgage balance, closing costs, and other expenses associated with the sale.

Market Monday: What is an appraisal? 🏡

An appraisal is an independent professional opinion of a property's value—and it can play an important role in the home buying process.

For example, you might agree to purchase a home for $350,000, but if the appraisal comes back at $330,000, you could be dealing with a $20,000 appraisal gap.
