Harrison Manor Apartments - 1962

At the time this photo was taken, the Harrison Manor Apartments, 2502-2516 Harrison Street, were being managed by the M. F. Steffen Company. Mathias F. Steffen, the owner of the company, and his wife Marie, lived inside, 2516 Harrison St., Apt. 3. In fact, this was also where he ran his business from. Others who lived in the apartments included Dr. George Braunlich (cardiologist), Hortense Finch (former English teacher at Davenport High), Ben C. Denkmann (former co-owner and operator of the Durant Elevator), Lyonne Young (former teacher at Annie Wittenmeyer), Claude Campbell (Engineer at the Rock Island Arsenal), Jerome Ruben (General Manager at William A. Bradford Company) and Lawrence Sorrowfree (charter member of the Davenport Board of Realtors), just to mention a few.

Harrison Manor Apartments were completed and ready for leasing by October 4, 1925.

The following is provided for your situational awareness and safety.

A planned Black Lives Matter Protest is scheduled for Thursday, 4 Jun 2020

starting at 5:00pm until 7:30pm at Vander Veer Botanical Park, Davenport

Iowa.

Vander Veer Botanical Park is located in the area of N. Harrison St., Brady

St., W. Lombard St., and W. Central Park Ave.

At this time it is estimated that approximately 700 people are planning to

attend and could reach over 2,000 people.

This event is planned to be a peaceful and socially distanced protest.

While some recent protests across the United States have been peaceful,

others have been marked by violence, shooting, looting, vandalism, arson,

and deadly clashes with police.

Below are some tips for your safety on how to remain safe during a protest:

- If you find yourself caught up in a protest or riot keep to the edge of

the crowd where it is safest. Try not to be identified as one of the

demonstrators by keeping well away from the leaders/agitators.

- At the first opportunity break away and seek refuge in a nearby building,

or find a suitable doorway or alley and stay there until the crowd passes.

- When leaving the fringe of the demonstration just walk away - don't run

as this will draw attention to you.

- In the event that you are arrested by the police/military, do not resist.

Go along peacefully.

- If you are caught up in the crowd, stay clear of glass shop fronts, stay

on your feet and move with the flow.

- If you are swept along in the crush, create a space for yourself by

grasping your wrists and bracing your elbows away from your sides; bend over

slightly - this should allow you breathing room

- If pushed to the ground, try to get against a wall and roll yourself into

a tight ball and cover your head with your hands until the crowd passes

- Remember to keep calm - the crowd should sweep past in a short space of

time

- If shooting breaks out, drop to the ground and cover your head and neck,

and lie as flat as you can.
