Canada is changing the way we think about road safety — protecting not only people, but animals as well. Across highways, special wildlife overpasses are built to look like natural habitats, complete with grass, trees, and soil.
These green bridges help animals such as bears, moose, wolves, deer, and cougars cross safely without danger from traffic.
One well-known example is in Banff National Park, Alberta, where research shows collisions have dropped by nearly 80%.
Hundreds of animals use these crossings every month. Canada’s success has inspired other countries to try the same idea, proving smart design can save both humans and wildlife.
